Weeks 1-3 by Nadiya Marrengulye - Thursday, 14 February 2013, 10:40 PM Today (Feb.14), I have discussed my plans with Lisa (1hr 45min). I showed her the probable outline for my research paper. I also e-mailed David Quinn and if it all goes well, we should meet Thur. (Feb. 21). I also plan to meet Dr. Pearson, a history professor from UNCA. I think that so far everything is going according to my plan. Great Job! by Lorraine Orenchuk - Monday, 18 February 2013, 08:31 AM It does sound like you have everything going according to plan. This is an exciting opportunity for you. I hope you are taking lots of pictures. Re: Progress by Nadiya Marrengulye - Monday, 18 February 2013, 11:32 PM Today is Mon. Feb.18th. I have e-mailed Dr. Pearson and she agreed to meet with me on Thur.Feb. 28th. So, this is really exiting Yes! by Lorraine Orenchuk - Wednesday, 20 February 2013, 08:56 PM I agree, Your progress is very exciting. I can't wait to see your reaction to the meeting next week.
Re: Yes! by Nadiya Marrengulye - Saturday, 23 February 2013, 11:02 PM Well, you think that's exting. What if I tell you that I actually arranged a meeting for Feb. 28th with Dr. Pearson and Mr. Quinn. They both agreed to edit my paper and provide me with all of the necessary resources. I also got the change to interview not only Mr. Quinn, who is very knowledgeable in the history of George Avery but also Mr. Taylor as well as Mr. Gibson, who both knew George Avery. I also got thesis my statement nailed and the order in which I'll present my argument (I think I have a decent outline).
Re: Yes! by Nadiya Marrengulye - Monday, 25 February 2013, 05:13 PM Well it turns out that I will not only be meeting Dr. Pearson and Mr. Quinn but we'll have Nambi join us. She an international student from Africa (UNCA) who is doing her project on the cemetary and the black history of the place. I'll ask both Dr. Pearson and Mr. Quinn to be my mentors. It keeps getting better.
Amazing by Lorraine Orenchuk - Thursday, 28 February 2013, 08:44 PM Nadiya, I know you are working hard, but this is really a powerful testimony to the benefits of hard work and persistence.
Wow! I think you went today and I was looking to see if I might get a peak at the substance of your meeting. I guess I will have to wait. Get some rest this weekend.
Re: Amazing by Nadiya Marrengulye - Friday, 1 March 2013, 12:59 AM Thank you for the encouragement Mrs.O. I was in need of it. I've got some pictures for you.
Re: Progress by Nadiya Marrengulye - Sunday, 3 March 2013, 07:51 PM I've typed 2 pages of my research paper.
Re: Progress by Nadiya Marrengulye - Monday, 11 March 2013, 09:14 AM I still have only the two of pages of my research done. Right now I'm working on my notecards. It seems that I should have done that first. Nonetheless, I'm working on it.
Re: Progress by Nadiya Marrengulye - Monday, 11 March 2013, 06:56 PM I guess that I do have some exciting news afterall. I don't want to brag myself but this is what my mentor said when I sent him a link to an article that made a whole lot terrible assumptions. This is something you cannot do unless you can back it up. You cannot make things up unless you can prove them. Here's the link: http://www.thelaurelofasheville.com/civil-war-journal-george-avery.html Nadiya, Thank you for forwarding this article to me. I would certainly like to see his sources. Unless there are documents to back this up, there is a great deal of speculation and assumptions about George Avery and W.W.McDowell. I am going to see if some friends with WNC and McDowell history can substantiate any of this. There are a lot of assumptions about McDowell's intent expressed.
Good research and great questions!
Re: Progress by Nadiya Marrengulye - Wednesday, 13 March 2013, 12:07 AM I'm done with my 35 notecards and thank you Mrs. O for making me do them because now I really know where my paper is going. NOTECARDS actuallly HELP a lot.
I have some exciting news. So I was reading a section of a book titled "A Popular History of WNC: Mountains, Heroes and Hootnuggers" by Rob Neufeld and then several minutes later I check my e-mail and there my mentor, Mr. Quinn, suggests that we contact Rob Neufeld who writes history articles for Asheville Citizen Times. Mr. Quinn had no idea that I was reading Neufeld's work. I told him of the this incident and he said that I'm " ...approaching this [project] very well" I thought to myself what a coincidence. It's sooooo Cool.
Terrific! by Lorraine Orenchuk - Tuesday, 19 March 2013, 01:31 PM Nadiya, I am so glad that your notecards were valuable When done carefully, they are amazing. Keep up the great work.
Re: Progress by Nadiya Marrengulye - Saturday, 16 March 2013, 07:51 PM I have completed 3 hours of community service completed this week.
Week 12 by Nadiya Marrengulye - Wednesday, 20 March 2013, 10:10 PM I found out today that I have been accepted into the dual enrollment RIBN program here at A-B Tech as well as at Western Carolina University. YES!!!
Re: Progress by Nadiya Marrengulye - Saturday, 23 March 2013, 09:08 PM OMG! I have such exciting news. I'll be meeting with Rob Neufeld. He's the historian whose book I was reading when my mentor e-mailed me and suggested that we contact him. He has been writing on the history of WNC for over 20 years. AWESOME!
Re: Progress by Nadiya Marrengulye - Saturday, 23 March 2013, 09:34 PM I totally forgot to say this- So far I have 5 1/2 pages completed. The paper is coming along real well.
Re: Progress by Nadiya Marrengulye - Monday, 25 March 2013, 11:55 PM More exciting news. I know that this is not connected to my project, but in July of this year, I'm going on a missionary trip with a youth group to parts of Syberia (Russia). YES!!!
Week 13 by Nadiya Marrengulye - Saturday, 13 April 2013, 07:03 PM I have finally completed all of my community service hours. I really enjoyed acting as a house slave. It was interesting to see the kids' reaction to the weird looking tools that the slaves used to use in the kitchen back in those days. Overall, it was empowering to have been able to teach about 200 kids about the slave history of their state and county. I was there from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm and I don't regret the experience.
Week 14 by Nadiya Marrengulye - Thursday, 18 April 2013, 12:43 PM I have completed my community service hrs. My first draft is also complete. I got about 98% of my mentor hrs finalized. I am currently working on the website and soon I plan to start on my product. I'll be developing questions for the interviews. I am meating with my mentor this Friday at the Holly Library and then I'm meeting another mentor on Monday at UNC-A.
Week - 15 by Nadiya Marrengulye - Saturday, 27 April 2013, 10:30 PM I have completed my community service hours, mentor hours and my paper is still being revised. I have have received the edited paper from Mrs. O and the two of my mentors. I will write my interview questions over this weekend to have them sent on Sun 27th. I will interview Dr. Pearson this upcoming week (for my product). I'm done with the website and so far that's all I have for updates.
Week - 16 by Nadiya Marrengulye - Sunday, 5 May 2013, 10:20 PM This week has been crazy with all the finals for college classes, so my focus has been to a great degree on college work. Nonetheless, I did interview Dr. Pearson and Dr. Waters for the documentary. Everything went well so soon I'll start my editing work.
Week 17 by Nadiya Marrengulye - Thursday, 9 May 2013, 10:43 PM I'm almost done with my works cited as well as the revisions, but again things are going slow because I have a lot of college work for this last week.
Week 18 by Nadiya Marrengulye - Monday, 20 May 2013, 12:56 AM The editing work is absolutely exhausting. Since Friday, until today Sunday, I've been getting about 4-5 hrs of sleep. I want this film to be my best work yet and I don't mind putting my best effort into it. I'm sorry Mrs.O, I know that you wanted an update on Thur. 16th but I totally forgot and remembered tonight.
