The Smith-McDowell House
Volunteer
James M. Smith built the house 20 years before the Civil War. After Smith's death, W. W. McDowell, his son-in-law became the new owner of the house. It is fascinating that George Avery walked the grounds of this house. On April 12th, 2013 about 200 kids came to tour the house and learn more about its history. The volunteerts dressed in costumes to reinact the period. I played the role of a slave house servant in the winter kitchen.
